Of all the plants we have grown in our nursery over the years, the 'Double Hybrids' have probably been the most exciting. We were very fortunate to be able to import some plants in 1986 from England, which were expertly quarantined by Dennis Hughes at Blue Mountain Nurseries in Tapanui which is not very far from our place. From these original plants and a very small amount of seed that came double, we have built up numbers to the stage where we can release the plants for sale.

As with the single H x orientalis, there is a huge variation in flower colour, shape and size, as well as they actual size of the plant and the form of the leaves.

The Doubles have their origin from a plant called Helleborus torquatus 'Dido' which was found in the wild to have a double form. It is interesting to note that the doubling is the result of the flowers nectaries developing into petals. Some appear to have a fluffy appearance with many layers of petals while others are flatter with two or three distinct rows of petals.

Anemone Centred More Views Pot Size: 2.5 litre Price: $20.00 Availability: IN STOCK Notify when available This line of plants is still somewhat of a mystery to us. We commonly refer to the Anemone Centered plants as being half way between a 'single' and a 'double'. The nectaries of the 'single' flower are elongated and form 'petaloids'. Interestingly, these 'petaloids' are always the same colour as the outer petals! Once the flower has been pollinated, the petaloids fall off and the flower appears as a 'single'. This drawback is compensated  by the Anemone Centred hybrids having a lot of flower stems as a mature plant, giving a long flowering season. Hardy and tolerant of sun, like all hellebores, they like free drainage. Generally pink shades although we are now getting some very pretty White and Picotee edged hybrids. Watch out for these next year!		Betty Ranicar Pot Size: 2.5 lt Price: $20.00 Availability: IN STOCK Notify when available A lovely strong growing hybrid, from Tasmania. Has huge dark green leaves, sometimes with a gold margin, and exquisite pure white flowers. These flowers are of unique shape, quite ruffled and are larger than most of our other hybrids.

Double Dark Purple More Views Pot Size: 2.5ltr Price: $20.00 Availability: IN STOCK Notify when available One of our original imports from England. Good dark colour on tall stems. Medium sized flowers and we are working to increase the flower size. We have now bred some new hybrids – these are stronger plants, have increased flower size and generally have a lot grater vigour. The downside is possibly the loss of the real dark purple, however we do get some stunning colours.		Double Green More Views Pot Size: 2.5 Price: $20.00 Availability: OUT OF STOCK Due: Next Season Notify when available Not a common hybrid and available only in small numbers. Soft green flowers. Medium to small sized and quite a compact plant form. Not a fast growing hybrid.Similar to the Yellow hybrid in form. Will often take another year to establish in the garden.

Double Maroon Edged Pot Size: 2.5 lt Price: $20.00 Availability: IN STOCK Notify when available This picture as causes a flurry of orders every time it appears. Unfortunately it is not an easily bred hybrid, so remains hard to supply. Has lovely soft maroon back on the flower which is accentuated by the pale inner petal colour. Medium sized flower. Another hybrid thay requires very good drainage.		Double Pink Pot Size: 2.5 lt Price: $20.00 Availability: IN STOCK Notify when available One of our larger lines although here is quite a lot of variation within the "Pinks", some are definitely darker than others. Tend to have larger flowers, and plants are quite vigorous.

Double Pink Freckled Pot Size: 2.5 lt Price: $20.00 Availability: IN STOCK Notify when available Another hybrid that gives plenty of colour variety. Flower stems are quite tall. Have a line that has frilly petals, giving a ball like appearance. Has great pink colour and a variety of spots/freckles.		Double White Pot Size: 2.5 lt Price: $20.00 Availability: IN STOCK Notify when available This hybrid has come from our own breeding program, not as vigorous as Betty Ranicar, but still a good showy double. Flowers are pure white, round and flat on medium stems.

Double White Spotted Pot Size: 2.5lt Price: $20.00 Availability: IN STOCK Notify when available Will be in short supply again this year.Pops up from line of plants and we need to try develop this to generate more. Spotting is quite delicate. Medium flower size.		Double Yellow Pot Size: 2.5 lt Price: $20.00 Availability: IN STOCK Notify when available One of the original hybrids we imported. This is a smaller growing plant which, when established, gives heaps of flower. Needs very good sharp drainage. It does not like wet roots! Has given us an interesting lineof plants that have spots. While it doesn't have large flowers, it certainly has plenty of them. We now also have hybrids that Kate has developed which have larger flowers and are more vigorous in their growth. We continue to develop this hybrid as making a more vigorous plant has been at the cost of colour. Our new hybrids would be better described as Primrose.
